Battery “first life” is dramatically extended by “peak shaving” the most harmful events from a duty cycle with high power density supercapacitors.
Our £500k Faraday Battery Challenge Feasibility study (IUK133720) commenced on Jan 1st 2019 and is establishing the weight/volume/cost trade-off of such a Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS). We are developing the power electronics, HESS algorithms and supercapacitor electrode material in Caerphilly, while project partners in QinetiQ (Dr Kevin Green) and London South Bank University (Prof. Steve Dunn) scale up/manufacture pouch cells, and develop high voltage electrolytes respectively.
